NHD Project Topic: Berlin Wall Injustice

Before I talk about my project,
I've researched about 2 hours last week, and this weekend and read 20 minutes of The Absolutely True Story of a Part Time Indian.

My project is on the Berlin Wall and the differences in rule and authority on each side of the wall. First of all Berlin was divided into two major sections, East Berlin (USSR) and West Berlin (USA,UK,France). My project is mainly focusing on the reason why the people under the Soviet rule wanted to escape to the West side so badly. Since that is my question, I am researching communism (Soviet government), The USSR (Soviet Union), and the laws and constitution of the soviets. The rights act comes in since the people living on the East side of the wall had no rights, and wanted to leave.
My topic is important mainly because of Communism. Countries now-a-days under Communist rule aren't working out very well because of their government. Take the USSR for example, In their constitution the people were given the freedom of speech and religion, but the government gave a "catch" to both of those rights. The people couldn't talk bad about their government or they would be punished, and they don't like people having their own religion because they see it as a bad thing. Both "rules" go against their own constitution. Think about it, there are still countries like this today. The government owns you, and the government is above individual rights of the people. Some see this as a good thing, but it doesn't work very well.

This week I am going to:
- research more databases about communism
- research more databases about the USSR
- continue reading the encyclopedia for background information
- Make an annotated bibliography for each searched topic
- Start to think of an argument.

  1. I am very interested in your topic Maddie! I have never focused on the Berlin Wall in this depth, so it is very interesting to learn new information just by your first paragraph. It seems as though you are very organized and preparing yourself well for the paper. Great job Maddie!
